The device has an articulated arm (3) displaced between a position internal to a gauge (2) of a vehicle (1) and a position external to the vehicle The arm has an end that is pivotably mounted on the vehicle, and another end supporting an observation unit (5) e.g. infrared camera. The arm is subjected to the action of a spring (7) for permanently restoring the observation unit towards the exterior of the vehicle so as to arrange the observation unit outside a gauge of the vehicle. The spring is fixed on a pin (8) integrated to the vehicle.
