<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfactorily display black side image, by aiming at reduction of the lowest luminance of black side, reducing decolorization, and improving contrast (reducing bright black display). <P>SOLUTION: An input video signal SV is amplified by an amplifying section 104 and then supplied to a panel drive section 106, and an image obtained by the input video signal SV is displayed on a liquid crystal panel 107. A user operates a volume 102 and sends an adjustment signal to a control section 101. On the basis of adjustment signal, the control section 101 adjusts the gain (a) in the amplifying section 104. In addition, when the changing power of the gain (a) is n fold, the control section 101 adjusts the luminance of the back light 108 to be 1/n fold. Making the adjustment so as to increase the gain (a) decreases the lowest luminance of black side, without change in the visual luminance.
