Energy storage and production system having an energy storage system based on storing potential energy and a salinity gradient energy production system (10). The energy storage system has a high energy salt water storage (3) and a high energy fresh 5 water storage (5) connected to the salinity gradient energy production system (10). The high energy salt water storage (3) is in communication with a salt water reservoir (7), and the high energy fresh water storage (5) is in communication with a fresh water reservoir (6). The salinity gradient energy production system (10) has an outlet system (14) for draining off water in the salt water reservoir (7). This allows to combine energy storage, energy production and water drainage or flushing in combination, e.g. in a dike or dam.
