The method involves detecting a communication error between one of three slave units (103, 105, 107) and a master unit (101), where one of the slave units is formed as an input module and the other of the slave units is formed as an output module. The output module is separated from a communication bus (109) or a power supply of the output module is disconnected or a veto-signal is transmitted over the bus by the slave or master units. The output module is transferred into a safe condition if the error exists and changes to an output or an input of the slave or master units is present.
