<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water treatment apparatus capable of quantitively and efficiently operating ultraviolet sterilization device and also preventing the risk of the flow-out of harmful material to a secondary side even when a water level difference i not enough for a treatment by a natural flow-down and the quantity of treating water flowing into a primary side is periodically varied in a water channel of a sebsequent stage of a sand filtration basin, an activated carbon filtration basin, a filter membrane filtration equipment or the like not enough in the water level difference. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The water treatment apparatus is provided with a first water channel (upstream side open water channel 1), a second water channel (downstream side open water channel 2), a siphon pipe line (by-pass pipe line 19) for connecting the first water channel to the second water channel, the ultraviolet sterilization apparatus 6, a lifting pump 7, a flow rate stabilization and back flow prevention mechanism 11 provided to the outlet of the siphon pipe line to the second water channel, a weir to make the water level in the mechanism 11 higher than that of the second water channel, a water level meter 13 for measuring the water level of the first water channel and a controller for controlling the water quantity to the ultraviolet sterilization treatment device by a detector water level signal.
