A password authentication apparatus and a password authentication method for preventing the leakage of password information from user's password input operations includes a storage means for storing a correct answer symbol and selection information for selecting at least one input symbol for each digit of a password; a display means for displaying combinations of input symbol candidates based on user operation; a determination means for selecting, for each digit of the password, one or more input symbols from the combinations of input symbol candidates displayed by the display means based on the selection information corresponding to the digit to determine whether the correct answer symbol corresponding to the digit is included in the selected one or more input symbols; and an authentication means for authenticating that the password is entered correctly when the determination means determines that correct answer symbols for all the digits of the password are included.
