The device has a laser scanner (3) for detection of an obstacle (5) in an opening area, and a video camera (11) for recording video images of the opening area. The recorded video images are reproduced by using a display screen (12). A control unit influences reproduction of the video images on the depending on signals detected by the laser scanner. The laser scanner is arranged at an outer mirror of a vehicle door (2). An output unit outputs optical and/or acoustic warning signals when detecting the obstacle in the opening area. An independent claim is also included for a method for detection of an obstacle in an opening area of a vehicle door.
