Gas-filled character cells 13, 15, 17 stacked between end plates 21 and 27 are energized by voltages applied between a transparent common electrode 28 carried on end wall 21 and overlying all the cells and individual electrodes 32, 34, 36 carried on end wall 27 and each overlying part only of one cell. In the embodiment shown the cells 13, 15, 17 are formed by apertures cut through glass plates 22, 24, 26 and closed by the end plates 21 and 27 and intermediate plates 23 and 25. Electrode 28 is a transparent coating of tin oxide, cadmium oxide or gold. Electrodes 32, 34 and 36 may be similar coatings. Holes 29 in the plates form a passageway leading to a conduit 30 used to evacuate the assembly and to introduce a filling of neon and argon at a pressure of 15-30 mm. Hg with the optional addition of nitrogen. Communication from the passageway 29 to the character cells may be by way of a channel cut in each plate (Fig. 4, not shown), or by mounting each character plate on an insulating plate provided with a network of passages (Fig. 2, not shown) or by relying on natural or artificially provided irregularities in the surfaces of the plates. Two or more cells may be provided in each character plate to form a multi-character display (Fig. 6, not shown). In alternative embodiments (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), channels representing different characters are cut in opposite faces of each character plate and are closed either by an intermediate plate or by a mirror image channel in an adjacent character plate, the intermediate plate being omitted.
