A vinyl chloride resin is produced by graft polymerizing to a mixture of (1) at least one elastomer containing 10 to 80% by weight of ethylene and selected from ethylene-vinyl ester copolymers, ethylene-acrylic acid ester copolymers and ethylene-vinyl ester-acrylic acid ester terpolymers and (2) at least one elastomer selected from ethylene-propylene copolymers, ethylene-propylene-non-conjugated diolefin terpolymers, butyl rubber and chlorinated butyl rubber, vinyl chloride or a mixture of vinyl chloride with up to 20% by weight based on the vinyl chloride content of one or more comonomers, said first and second-named elastomers and said monomer or monomers being present in the graft polymer in amounts, on a weight basis, of 1 to 15%, 2 to 15% and 97 to 70%, respectively. The polymerization is carried out in solution, suspension or emulsion, preferably by dissolving the elastomers in the monomer or monomers and then dispersing the solution in an aqueous medium. In the examples, vinyl chloride, alone or together with 2-ethylhexyl vinyl ether, is grafted on to a mixture of ethylenevinyl acetate and ethylene-propylene copolymers and vinyl chloride alone is grafted on to a mixture of ethylene-ethyl acrylate and ethylenepropylene copolymers, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and butyl rubber or chlorinated butyl rubber, or ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and ethylene-propylene-dicyclopentadiene terpolymer. The graft polymers produced are compounded with dibutyl tin maleate and butyl stearate. |
