1,192,205. Methacrylonitrile copolymers. PRINCETON CHEMICAL RESEARCH Inc. 31 May, 1967, No. 45309/68. Divided out of 1,192,204. Heading C3P. Novel random copolymers comprise from 25-45 parts by weight of units of methacrylonitrile, from 13-45 parts by weight of units of styrene, a substituted styrene or vinylnaphthalene, 5-25 parts by weight of units of butadiene and, optionally, a minor amount of units of another comonomer (unspecified). The substituted styrene may be α-methyl styrene or vinyltoluene. The copolymers are useful for moulding into articles, e.g. sheets, film tubing, rods and heat-sealable films, and for forming protective coatings, and can be cured if desired. In examples, the copolymers are prepared by emulsion polymerization (using sodium lauryl sulphate as emulsifier) in the presence of potassium persulphate and dodecyl mercaptan, and polymerization is terminated by addition of hydroquinone dimethyl ether; N-phenyl-#- naphthylamine is added as an antioxidant. Solutions of the polymers are formed in methyl ethyl ketone. |
