The device has outer and inner drills that are concentric and rotationally fixed to one another. A stop unit interrupts a driving operation of the drills, when the inner drill is axially moved relative to the outer drill. A sensor (40) e.g. hall-sensor, is arranged at a set distance from an end of the outer drill. An axial movement of the inner drill towards the outer drill is detected in a capacitive or inductive manner or by a photoelectric barrier. The stop unit directly stops a drive unit (50) of the drills, when the inner drill is moved by a preset value relative to the outer drill.
