An apparatus, which is connected to a standard cash register or is built into a cash register and includes a keyboard, display panel, magnetic reader, and electronic computer system, that authorizes payment using credit cards, or alternately denies such authorization. The user must input his or her PIN using the apparatus's keyboard so that the apparatus's internal system may authorize the cash register to debit the credit card.
