A transmission having a rotatable disc (34) mounted coaxially about a longitudinal axis (11) of the transmission; a plurality of tiltable balls (1) placed angularly about the longitudinal axis (11) and in contact with the rotatable disc (34); a nonrotatable disc (101) mounted coaxially about the longitudinal axis (11) and in contact with the plurality of tiltable balls (1); a rotatable idler (18) placed radially inward of, and in contact with, the plurality of tiltable balls (1); and a rotatable cage (89) operably coupled to the plurality of tiltable balls (1);
one of the rotatable idler (18), the rotatable disc (34), or the rotatable cage (89) is adapted to rotate freely without transferring power.
