<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To excellently heat and sterilize an object to be sterilized in a short period of time by rapidly and uniformly heating the inner part of a retort oven. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a retort sterilization apparatus and the method thereof, the objects (r) to be sterilized are placed on trays 4 having slits 4a on the bottom surfaces 41. The respective trays 4 are stacked in a multi-stage state and introduced to the inner part of the retort oven 1, and then, the objects (r) to be sterilized are heated and sterilized by heating the inner part of the retort oven 1. The apparatus includes: a spray pipe 6 arranged at a position right under the slits 4a of the trays 4 in accordance with the slits 4a; and steam pipes 5, 5 arranged in parallel on the both sides of the spray pipe 6 while holding the spray pipe 6 between them. While heated water is made into mist and sprayed from the spray pipe 6 toward the slits 4a of the trays 4, high-temperature and high-pressure steam is sprayed from the steam pipes 5, 5 toward the heating water.
