<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To modify a black character part of a portion, where a photograph block copy and a character document are overlapped into a discriminable image, when forming an image by overlapping both without using an external device such as a computer. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes a scanner for scanning a document image and an image processor for processing read image data. The image processor includes an image processing switching section for selecting whether photograph processing or character processing is to be performed on the image data scanned by the scanner; a photograph processing section for performing photograph processing on photograph image data scanned by the scanner when the photograph processing is selected; a character processing section for performing character processing on character image data scanned by the scanner when the character processing is selected; and an image synthesizing section for synthesizing results of the photograph processing by the photograph processing section and results of the character processing by the character processing section in pixel, inverting black pixels of a character part into white pixels and synthesizing them when the black pixels in the character part of the character processing results are overlapped with a high-density part of the photograph processing results at such a time.
