<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine capable of performing ignition retard control fitted to a driver's intention with respect to the behavior of a vehicle in acceleration. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The control device applied to a spark-ignition internal combustion engine 2 mounted on the vehicle 1 as a traveling power source and performing ignition retard control for retarding ignition in acceleration of the vehicle 1 stores a plurality of maximum values of a time differential of an operation amount with respect to an accelerator pedal 15 by the driver and differences between an upper limit value and a lower limit value of fluctuation of longitudinal direction acceleration obtained by the operation, indicates a correction direction of the ignition retard amount in ignition retard control based on the average value, and corrects the ignition retard amount to the indicated direction.
