PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bismuth-based glass composition in which crystals hardly deposit in the glass even upon calcining at about 500°C and which enables sealing at 450-500°C in spite of no PbO, and a sealing material. SOLUTION: The bismuth-based glass composition comprises, by mol% expressed in terms of the following oxides, 32-50% Bi<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, 10-40% B<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, 10-29% ZnO, 0.05-5% SnO<SB>2</SB>and 0-20% MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO as its glass composition.
