PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data transmission device for achieving a transmission form in accordance with an aim of data to be transmitted when video image data is transmitted. SOLUTION: Data indicating the transfer mode of a transmission packet is inserted in a payload portion contained in the transmission packet of serial digital transfer interface (SDTI), and data indicating the timing mode of the transmission packet is inserted in the payload portion. As transfer modes, there are a synchronous transfer mode and an isochronal transfer mode besides the asynchronous transfer mode. The timing mode specifies which field of the transmission frame should be used for synchronization when the transmission packet is transmitted, and the timing mode includes a normal mode which uses a first field, an advanced mode which uses a second filed, and a dual mode which uses both fields.
