PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a map information processing apparatus capable of performing route searches and route guidance over maps of new and old versions. SOLUTION: The map information processing apparatus includes both a map data storage part 102 and a route search/guidance part 107. The map data storage part stores map data having a hierarchical structure, and its version is to be upgraded for every area in which the version of an upper-layer map corresponding to a lower-layer map is upgraded according to the upgrade of the version of the lower-layer map; and the route search/guidance part searches for routes through the use of map data of the lower-layer map and the upper-layer map stored in the map data storage part, displays a route on the lower-layer map corresponding to a route on the upper-layer map acquired by the route search in the case that it exists to perform route guidance, and performs simplified guidance indicating the direction to a destination in the case that a route on the lower-layer map corresponding to a route on the upper-layer map does not exist.
