<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To supply sheets at minimum intervals regardless of a change or variation in the positions of the sheets in a sheet stacking tray. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A control device controls the operation of a pick-up roller 13 in accordance with the output of a detecting sensor 15. The control device starts the pick-up roller 13 to start the carriage of the second sheet in a feed tray 11 when the detecting sensor 15 detects the rear end of the first sheet, stops the pick-up roller 13 only for a α-β time, where α is a predetermined time and β is a time after the detecting sensor 15 detects the rear end of the first sheet but before it detects the front end of the second sheet, when the detecting sensor 15 detects the front end of the second sheet, and then drives the pick-up roller 13 to restart the carriage of the second sheet.
