<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain further precise images. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This confocal microscope 11 is built by using an objective lens 22 to converge the light on the sample 12, pinholes to pass the light through their open areas of a predetermined diameter, and a pinhole turret 46 incorporating open areas having the inner diameters approximately the same as the pinholes and passing ring shaped light beams with the area of the outer diameters larger than that of the pinholes. It passes the light from the sample 12 at the position conjugate to the focal point of the objective lens 22 by turning the pinhole turret 46, and switches the pinholes and the open areas to use the light for observing the sample 12. The light passing through the pinhole is detected by switching of the light detector unit 16. This invention is applicable, for example, to confocal laser microscope.
