<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silicon electrode having improved cycle characteristics, as a lithium secondary battery anode. <P>SOLUTION: The anode includes an array 1 of sub-micron silicon peelers supported on a silicon substrate. A film of a Zintl phase compound is formed on the silicon peelers in a discharging process. The electrode is part of a battery including a cathode 4 containing lithium to form the battery, and nonaqueous electrolyte 5.
