PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable automatic wastepaper determination in an image forming apparatus, to make a wastepaper determination standard appropriate according to paper conditions or user conditions and to reduce troublesome operations required to set the standard. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an image forming section which performs image formation on paper on the basis of image data; a defect detecting section which detects defect of the paper; and a control section which makes wastepaper determination on the basis of the set wastepaper determination standard upon receipt of an output from the defect detecting section. The control section has a plurality of determination levels as the wastepaper determination standards, and switches the setting of the defect determination standards according to given conditions.
