A solar cell comprises a substrate made of a textile surface structure. The textile surface structure is made of transparent glass fiber threads and electrically conducting but non-transparent carbon fiber threads. The glass fiber threads serve as spacers and fillers for the carbon fiber threads so that closed interstices of sufficient transparency result between the carbon fiber threads, whereby the light can pass through the substrate. On both sides of the so formed substrate are semiconductor layers forming a blocking layer therebetween. One electrode is formed by the carbon fiber threads of the substrate.
