Disclosed is a vehicle vicinity monitoring device able to recognize with a high degree of accuracy whether or not an object is a designated quadruped animal. According to this vehicle vicinity monitoring device, the aspect ratio of a first object region is 1 or greater, a plurality of second object regions are extracted, and a judgment of whether or not the first object region and a second object region correspond to a designated quadruped animal is made according to whether or not the ratio of the height of the second object region to the height of the first object region lies within the range of the ratio of the leg height to the torso height of a common designated quadruped animal.
