<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress reduction of photo sensitivity, to suppress deterioration of a liquid crystal layer, and to suppress deterioration of image quality. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An optical writing display apparatus performs: a first initialization process for applying, to a pair of electrodes, with a first polarity, voltage of a first voltage value at which a partial voltage to a cholesteric liquid crystal layer becomes a value more than a threshold at which the state of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer changes from focal conic to homeotropic when the exposure is conducted with exposure light and performing irradiation with exposure light; then a second initialization process for stopping applying the voltage for a predetermined time and performing exposure with exposure light during a period when application of the voltage is stopped; and an image writing process, after the second initialization process, for applying a voltage of a second voltage value at which a partial voltage to a cholesteric liquid crystal layer having a polarity opposite to the first polarity becomes a value not more than a threshold at which the state of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer changes from focal conic to homeotropic when the exposure is not conducted with exposure light and becomes a value more than the threshold when the exposure is conducted with the exposure light, and selectively performing exposure with exposure light to write an image and then stopping applying the second voltage.
