<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control apparatus for an internal combustion engine capable of properly executing starting control in accordance with a prestored stopper crank position. <P>SOLUTION: An electronic control apparatus 40 grasps a crank position based on a signal of a crank angle sensor 50, and stores the crank position as the stopped crank position when stopping the engine, and executes the starting control in accordance with this prestored stopped crank position when starting the engine. An inclination state of a vehicle 100 mounted with the internal combustion engine 1 and a shift position of a transmission 30 of the vehicle 100 are grasped. The rotation direction of a crankshaft 2 in accordance with rotation of a wheel 34 when stopping the engine 1, is determined based on this grasped shift position and the grasped inclination state of the vehicle 100.
