An iron molybdate catalyst is manufactured from a precursor containing molybdate, ferric and ammonium ions. The precursor is heated up to 150-250 DEG C and thereafter admixed with water, shaped and dried. It may be activated by further heating. This catalyst which may contain minor amounts of additional metals may be used in the oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde.
