<p>Dehydrating alcohol comprises dehydrating an organic compound (E) containing one or more hydroxyl groups per molecule, in presence of a liquid medium and an acid catalyst (K) at 180-280[deg] C, where the liquid medium contains an ionic liquid, whose anionic part is e.g. fatty alcohol sulfate-building block; and is obtained by reacting corresponding ionic liquid with same cationic building block, but having a halide, as an anionic building block, with a compound from e.g. an acid semi ester of a fatty alcohol sulfate, and removing the obtained hydrogen halide gas form the reaction mixture.
