Provided are cathode compositions for a lithium-ion battery having the formula Li[Li<SUB>x</SUB>Mn<SUB>a</SUB>Ni<SUB>b</SUB>Co<SUB>c</SUB>M<SUB>d</SUB>]O<SUB>2 </SUB>where M is a metal other than Mn, Ni, or Co, and x+a+b+c+d=1; x>=0; b>a; 0<a<=0.4; 0.4<=b<0.5; 0.1<=c<=0.3; and 0<=d<=0.1. The provided compositions are useful as cathodes in secondary lithium-ion batteries. The compositions can include lithium transition metal oxides that can have at least two dopants from Group 2 or Group 13 elements. The transition metal oxides can include one or more materials selected from manganese, cobalt, and nickel. The provided compositions can provide cathode materials that have high specific capacities and high thermal stability. |
