PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for driving a light source in backlight unit are provided to reduce the power consumption by driving LED array in a hybrid drive method using both PWM and PAM(Pulse Amplitude Modulation). CONSTITUTION: A light source drive apparatus of backlight unit comprises a plurality of LED(Light Emitting Diode) columns and LED driver(21). The driving voltage is supplied to LED columns by the LED driver. The LED driver delays the PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) signal sequentially. The LED columns are controlled by the PWM signals. The LED driver adjusts the duty ratio of the PWM signal in response to the input mode signal from outside. The LED driver adjusts the driving voltage.
