Class 34(2) A method of drying the plates and/or separators of a dry-charged battery comprises passing a flow of hot air parallel to and adjacent to the surfaces of the plates &c. said air having an average velocity in excess of 2,000 feet per minute and a minimum temperature according to the equation V+40T=14,600, where V is the average velocity in feet per minute and T the temperature of the incoming air in degrees Fahrenheit, said temperature not exceeding 425‹F. As shown, wet cell elements 21 set in openings 20 in a support shelf in a drying chamber 16 are dried by a stream of hot air and combustion gas which emanates from a burner-fired combustion chamber 14 and is forced up through the chamber 16 and around the elements 21 to an exhaust 23 by a blower 15. The air, which enters the chamber 14 through an intake 11, is heated to 360‹F. and passes over the elements at, e.g. 8,000 feet per minute. Thermometers 18, 20 measure the air inlet and outlet temperatures respectively, and a thermostaticallycontrolled device 24 reacts at a desired exhaust temperature to shut off the burner and the blower. The air may be heated by a steam coil or an electric heater. |
