THE PRESENT INVENTION PROVIDES OLIGONUCLEOTIDE PRIMERS THAT ARE SPECIFIC FOR NUCLEIC ACID CHARACTERISTIC OF BETA-LACTARNASE ENZYME IN PROKARYOTES. THE PRIMERS CAN BE EMPLOYED IN A METHOD TO IDENTIFY NUCLEIC ACID CHARACTERISTIC OF THE IMP FAMILY OF BETA- LACTAMASE ENZYMES IN SAMPLES, AND PARTICULARLY, IN CLINICAL ISOLATES OF GRAM NEGATIVE NON-ENTEROBACTERIACEAE BACTERIA. THE INVENTION ALSO RELATES TO A DIAGNOSTIC KIT COMPRISING THE PRIMERS FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTIVE METHOD. THE PRIMERS AND OPTIMIZED METHODS DISCLOSED IN THE PRESENT INVENTION ARE CAPABLE OF SPECIFICALLY IDENTIFYING THE ENTIRE CODING REGION OF IMP-TYPE METALLO-BETA-LACTAMESE ENZYMES, WHICH CONFER TO CARBAPENEM RESISTANCE AMONG CERTAIN GRAM NEGATIVE NON- ENTEROBACTERIACEAE BACTERIA IN A RAPID MANNER.
