PURPOSE: A reciprocating compressor is provided to enlarge variable rate by selectively leaking a part of compressed gas. CONSTITUTION: A reciprocating compressor comprises a drive motor, a sleeve(21), a connecting rod(22), a piston, a cylinder(24), and a mode converting unit(100). The drive motor has a crank shaft(13) transferring torque. The sleeve is coupled on an eccentric portion of the crank shaft. The connecting rod converts the rotational motion of the crank shaft into the linear motion. The cylinder has one or more exhaust holes(24a). The exhaust hole leaks the compacted refrigerant. The mode converting unit selectively opens and closes the exhaust hole of the cylinder The mode converting unit is composed of a drive part, a connecting member(120), and one or more valve parts(130). The drive part is operated by the electric power supply. The valve part opens and closes the exhaust hole while reciprocating linearly.
