[Also in Division E1] Polymerizable soil stabilizer compositions comprise (1) acrylamide; (2) a polymerizable, water-soluble cross-linking agent; (3) from a trace up to 10% by weight (based on the acrylamide) of sodium or ammonium acrylate; and (14) at least one of sodium, ammonium and magnesium methacrylates and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, the composition being capable of forming a homogeneous aqueous solution with a concentration of 40% by weight at 0‹ C. Specified as component (2) are methylene bisacrylamide, methylenebismethacrylamide, 1,3- di(acrylamidomethyl)- 2 - imidazolidone and the corresponding di(methacrylamidomethyl) compound, and 1,3,5 - triacryloyl - hexahydro - # - triazine. The compositions may also include acrylonitrile and/or N-methylolacrylamide, as well as acetonitrile, N-methylpyrrolidone, dimethyl sulphide, dimethyl sulphoxide or sulpholan, a mono-(C 1 -C 4 ) alkyl ether of ethylene glycol or a water-soluble polyhydric compound, and a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. iodine and cupferron. The compositions are used for stabilizing soil by applying the composition in the form of a 2-20% by weight aqueous solution to soil, together with a redox catalyst to effect polymerization of the composition. Suitable catalysts comprise an oxidizing agent such as ammonium or potassium persulphate, and a reducing agent such as sodium thiosulphate, ferrous sulphate, dimethylaminopropionitrile, dimethylamino ethanol, N,N,- N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP> - tetramethylethylenediamine or a # - diketone. |
