Document sensors 24, 29 detext the passage of documents into and out of a path 22 and step a shift-register counter 44 -47 forwards or backwards so that the register is in a state representative of the number of documents in path 22 at any given time; and register 44-47 controls the entry of accept/reject selector signals, from computer 20 or derived from reading station 16, into one or other of shift registers 91, 92 which are advanced as each document passes detector 29 and control a sorting gate 26. The circuit may be extended, Fig. 2 (not shown), to cater for more than two output stackers. |
