PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a failure determining device for a variable valve system capable of favorably determining a failure part in the variable valve system. SOLUTION: This failure determining device includes the variable valve system 10 capable of mechanically changing opening characteristics of valves with respect to the rotation of a camshaft according to the rotating position of a control shaft 16 rotationally driven by a motor 14; a countershaft 26 which is interposed between the control shaft 16 and the output shaft of the motor 14 and transmits the torque of the motor 14 to the control shaft 16; and a first rotating angle sensor 32 for detecting the rotating angle of the countershaft 26 and a second rotating angle sensor 34 for detecting the rotating angle of the control shaft 16. Based on the output value of the first rotating angle sensor 32 and the output value of the second rotating angle sensor 34 when the motor 14 receives a drive instruction, the failure part of the actuator 12 of the variable valve system 10 is determined.
