Novel adducts of tertiary amines, alkanols and either carbon dioxide or carbonyl sulphide having the formulae <FORM:1061675/C2/1> wherein R, R1 and R11 are selected such that NRR1R11 represents a tertiary amine and R111 represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl radical, are prepared by reacting the components together at temperatures ranging from 0 DEG to 50 DEG C. The sulphur-containing adduct may be oxidized to yield a dialkyl carbonate or both classes of adduct may be reacted with inorganic salts to form metal derivatives of carbonates, e.g. calcium methyl or ethyl carbonate, calcium ethyl thiolcarbonate and sodium ethyl carbonate. In examples trimethylamine, triethylenediamine, 1 - azabicyclo(3,2,1)octane, 1 - azabicyclo(2,2,2)octane, triethylamine and tripropylamine are used as tertiary amine components. |
