Pivalolactone is purified by (1) intimately mixing it at 5-95 deg.C with an aq. alkaline medium having a pH of 8-13, (2) separating the lactone and (3) intimately mixing the lactone with dimineralised water contg. not more than 8 x 10-3 wt. % total metal cpds. calc. as metal. The purified pivalolactone has much improved stability against spontaneous polymerisation at room temp. during storage and during heating, controlled polymerisation gives a polyester of high mol. wt.
