The method involves measuring and transferring quantity of energy reserves to a control device (3). Graphic data is produced to display a parameter on a display (4) e.g. LCD, depending on a reference surface e.g. bar, such that quantity of the reference surface is larger and the parameter is smaller, if a threshold value is fallen below the parameter. The parameter is displayed on the display depending on an additional reference surface such that the quantity of the reference surface is larger, and the parameter is larger, if the parameter does not fall below the threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a device for displaying a quantity of energy reserves on a display for driving a motor vehicle.
