The method involves arranging a regenerative exhaust gas cleaning device (52) and a burner (54) in an exhaust line (50) of an internal combustion engine (10). A fuel is temporarily supplied with a substoichiometric combustion air ratio for regenerating the cleaning device. Parts of the fuel quantity supplied to the burner are transmitted into respective reaction zones of the burner when operating the burner with the combustion air ratio, where one of the reaction zones lies downstream to the other reaction zone. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine comprising an exhaust system.
