<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus and a data amount reducing method which reduces the operation of a user when reducing the data amount of a recording-finished program. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The recording apparatus includes a recording portion which records a broadcast program, a copy portion which copies the recorded broadcast program to an external recording medium, a memory portion to memorize a table showing the number of times of copy of the recorded broadcast program, a determination portion which determines whether the data amount of the recorded data is reduced or not based on the number of times of the copy, and a reduction processing portion which reduces the data amount of the recorded program based on the determination.
