<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable confirming that roll paper is certainly equipped, and to enable detecting an accident such as the loss or theft of paper in early stage. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the printer using roll paper wherein a winding core has a non-contact IC unit capable of communicating with the printer, by periodically communicating with the non-contact IC unit, the printer checks the remaining amount of the roll paper, and monitors the presence/absence of the roll paper. If communication with the roll paper becomes impossible when the remaining amount of the roll paper is not less than a predetermined amount, it is determined that the roll paper has been removed, and it is reported to an administrator of the printer that the roll paper has been removed.
