Automatic plant (2) control method in which a number of plant components (4) are controlled by a central control unit which receives sensor signals and process guidance signals (P) relating to component states and generates corresponding actuator control signals (S) to control the plant components. Mobile operating units (12), employed by maintenance staff wishing to service components, issue requests or commands that are routed to the central controller via an interface (14). The control unit releases the component based on the received signal and a location value for the mobile unit. An Independent claim is made for a process control system.
