PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device effective for improving starting property, lengthening the life of a discharge lamp, suppressing a change of a discharging condition in starting, and minimizing a going-out time. SOLUTION: A DC/AC converter 21 converts DC voltage V1 into AC voltage V2 to be output. A high voltage generation part 22 outputs such pulse superposed AC voltage Vout that pulse voltage Vp is superposed on the AC voltage V2 supplied from the DC/AC converter 21. A microprocessor 4 has a timing for controlling the high voltage generation part 22 so that the pulse voltage Vp is synchronized with the AC voltage V2 at starting and superposed on the AC voltage V2 in both positive and negative cycles of the AC voltage V2.
