<p>Provided is a wire grid type polarizer, which exhibits a high polarizing separation in a visible light range and which has improved transmissivity of a short-wave range. Also provided is a method capable of manufacturing the wire grid type polarizer easily. The wire grid type polarizer (10) comprises an optically transparent substrate (14) having a plurality of ridges (12) formed on the surface in parallel with each other and at a predetermined pitch, a surface layer (22) existing on at least the tops of the ridges (12) and made of a metal oxide, and metal fine lines made of a metal layer (24) existing on the surface of the surface layer (22) and on at least the tops of the ridges (12).</p>
