<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp further reducing a start-up voltage. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the discharge lamp equipped with a pair of main electrodes 2 on the outer face of a discharge tube 1 to generate discharge in the discharge tube 1 by a voltage applied to the main electrode 2, in one part of the discharge tube 1 or a member connected to the discharge tube 1, a pair of auxiliary electrodes 3 to generate creeping discharge on an inner wall face 13 of the discharge tube 1 is equipped. Triggered by the surface discharge generated on the inner wall face 13 by the pair of auxiliary electrodes 3, therefore, the main discharge is generated between the pair of main electrodes 2 at a low voltage.
