<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a magnetic recording head, in which production variation of a main magnetic pole is suppressed. Ž<P>SOLUTION: After cutting a wafer such that the end in the +X direction of a hard mask 52 formed buried in the wafer is positioned at the end in the +X direction of the wafer 90, its body part 56 is cut from the +X direction in consideration of the positional relation (a distance h) between an ABS surface and the hard mask 52. Accordingly, a neck height portion 2a is formed at a portion which is in contact with the hard mask. Moreover, the neck height portion is cut such that the +X end of the neck height portion 2a matches the ABS surface. Using the hard mask, the neck height portion is formed precisely, the neck height portion is formed by cutting the body part in consideration of the ABS surface, and the length of the neck height portion is so adjusted as to match the ABC surface.
