<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shield boring machine capable of advancing to excavate in a wellbalanced manner and performing direction control easily and accurately. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The shield boring machine comprises: an annular penetration hood 111; a hood jacking jack 113 provided at the penetration hood 111 and taking reaction from an existing segment 19 to advance the penetration hood 111 by one ring portion of a segment 20 at least; an inner peripheral shield 116 retractably provided on the inner periphery of the penetration hood 111; and an erector 22 provided at the penetration hood 111 and assembling the segment 20 during the advance of the inner peripheral shield 116.
