PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image capturing apparatus, a focus control method, and a program for enhancing the response speed of devices by making an interval needed between AF and AF substantially shorter. SOLUTION: The image capturing apparatus is configured to acquire a first evaluation value showing contrast intensity of an image signal based on an object image at each of a plurality of predetermined positions in a first period where a focus lens 34 is driven within a predetermined range, to acquire a second evaluation value to be acquired at any predetermined position corresponding to the first evaluation value among the plurality of predetermined positions in a second period until the focal position based on the first evaluation value is calculated after the lapse of the first period, to measure variation of the evaluation value on the basis of the second evaluation value and the first evaluation value corresponding to the position of the second evaluation value, and then, to decide the following driving range of the focus lens 34 on the basis of the focal position calculated from the first evaluation value and the variation of the evaluation value.
